About Us

STAVKA was originally formed at the end of the last century with a simple aim. To make historic military images from the Eastern Front accessible to Western publishers, authors and researchers.

Our name is Russian in origin (Ставка) and in it's original form refers to a headquarters or high command within various Russian or Soviet armed forces. Given we were formed to serve as the authority on images of the Russian and Soviet Armies, it felt apt!

​

During the 1990s, when we made many trips to the former Soviet Union, we were very often the first westerners to have ever seen the photographs that we were finding in various museums, archives and private collections. The connections forged in those early days continue to serve us well nearly 30 years later. Today, STAVKA is well known for our expert research services and extensive image library, which simply put, is one of the best in private hands in the Western World.
