Author's biography

The first time I wrote something that was published was in the summer of 1991. The magazine was Wargames Illustrated and the article was one of a series on the Eastern Front during World War One. This was the start of my career as an author. Following this article, I wrote extensively for number of magazines, although sadly, few of these remain in print today.

During research for an article, I met Nicholas Volkov-Muromtsev, a veteran of the Russian Civil War, active in southern Russia from 1919-20. The friendship that developed fostered my growing interest in that horrific conflict, an interest which has since expanded hugely over the last 3 decades. A contract to write a book for the Men-at-Arms series for Osprey Books led to my visiting Russia for the first time in 1996 and this put me in touch with important military artist, Andrey Karaschuk. We have since collaborated on a number of books and our first, for Osprey, was The Russian Army 1914-18 which came out in 2001.

Since then, I have written extensively about conflict on the Eastern Front covering a range of different time periods and topics.  I continue to write and am currently planning a  book on the Russian Civil War in the south of Russia, Ukraine and the Caucasus in the near future.
